After 9/11 every assignment seemed to be in Afghanistan or Pakistan. Endlessly fascinating, visually stunning but a challenging and sometimes dangerous environment to work in.

Late 2002 and early 2003 was spent looking for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Covering the build up to, what felt like inevitable, war I worked with Peter Jennings and Ted Koppel for ABC News. In a matter of months, Iraq went from being a very safe destination for journalists, to one of the most dangerous.

The 2003 invasion of Iraq, Operation Iraqi Freedom, lasted from 20 March to 1 May 2003. The United States military responded to pressure from the country's news media, who were disappointed by the level of access granted during the 1991 Gulf War and in the 2001 U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, by putting hundreds of accredited journalists with different military units. I was assigned to 1st LAR US Marines.

Captain John Noel, a pioneer of Everest exploration and photography, was the official cameraman on Mallory and Irvine's 1922 and 1924 expeditions. In 2007, I followed in Noel's footsteps, filming for the Discovery Channel. I travelled through Tibet, climbed the North Col (the highest point he reached) and continued to where both Mallory and Irving went missing in 1924.
